Meet ISPA's 2017 Global Fellowship Program participant Helen Mechitova!
Founder/ Director, Art Bridge
Helen Mechitova is a cultural entrepreneur and arts administrator based in Tbilisi, Georgia. She works on different projects related to performing arts, social changes through arts, education formal and informal. Mechitova is the founding director of annual music festival Kavkaz Jazz Festival since 2010, which was started as a peace building platform for artists from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, especially for last two who have a military conflict since beginning of 90's. Now Kavkaz Jazz became a significant music event of the South Caucasus region. Festival includes educational elements as workshops and master classes by experts and professionals, and round tables for music critics and journalists from South Caucasus and other countries. The festival serves as a cultural bridge and provides an opportunity for audiences to hear diverse styles of music by emerging artists from the region and all over the world. In 2012, Mechitova founded the independent organization Art-Bridge to provide professional support for artists through educational and exchange programs. She developed and coordinated several projects across the South Caucasian region in the worlds of culture, education, youth, through the work at the NGO Art Bridge or independently. In 2016 Mechitova implemented educational programme with professors of Jamey Aeberesold Jazz Studies of University of Louisville, KY, USA. It was an intensive course for students of high music schools in Tbilisi. Recently, Kavkaz Jazz and its educational program appeared to the October issue of DownBeat, a well-known jazz magazine worldwide.
