Sokhorn Yon

Cambodia

Program Manager, Cambodian Living Arts

I am currently a program manager at Cambodian Living Arts, managing and facilitating “Arts Development” program which aims to (1) enable artists and cultural leaders by providing training, funding, resources and networks and (2) integrate arts and culture into the life experiences of young people. I have spent five years at CLA, and works directly with communities, major institutions such as Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and artists as a supporter, team leader, manager, and facilitator for various projects including professional development, commissioning, scholarship, exchange and workshops and organizing (regular) performance and festival and so on. I have also supported and led tours to Korea, U.S and Singapore, and leads on the production of the annual Jolana Jongjam (Act of Memory), Amatak festival and the monthly special performance. I have attended international workshops and events. I am also the one to do the strategically annual plan and budget. I feel that arts have helped me to know my country in a different way, and to really be part of CLA’s mission to be a catalyst in a vibrant arts sector, inspiring new generations.

ISPA: Sokhorn, what are the three adjectives that describe you?
Sokhorn:
Determined, creative, and supportive.
ISPA: What’s your favorite city in the world?
Sokhorn:
Yokohama-a creative city of Japan is my favorite because of its wide range of culture, respectful people and intimate environment of living/interaction. One of the things that i like in particular about it is the ubiquitous presence of the arts space/venue, architectural styles and museums, which is an inspiring cultural landscape.
ISPA: Can you name one channel that you subscribe to or frequently visit to stay up-to-date with news about the arts and culture in your region?
Sokhorn: I usually visit Asian Cultural council's Facebook Page and its website to see what is happening and especially looking for opportunities available in term of arts and culture in Asia twice a week.
ISPA: Is there anything in particular that you would like the ISPA colleagues and friends to know about you or your work?
Sokhorn:

My job in Arts Development Program is directly related to developing arts, and this includes creating art and presenting it to the public through performances, festivals or workshops and training people who work in the arts, such as artists, arts managers, and technical staff. One thing that makes me proud in working in this sector is that I've got the chance to work with and support the creative generations of Cambodian artists to create the work that is meaningful and relevant to them.
