Meriç Öner is an architect,
and an associate director of research and programs at SALT, İstanbul. Upon a
few years of professional practice, Öner assessed public debates and research
on the man-made environment over the act of building. She was the coordinator
of parallel exhibitions in the 22nd world congress of architecture,
UIA 2005 Istanbul. She assisted several exhibitions on design, architecture and
urban culture at Garanti Galeri between 2007-2010. She is the coordinator of Becoming Istanbul (2008), an interdisciplinary
database built to challenge the misconceptions on the contemporary city. She
edited Tracing Istanbul (from the air)
(2009) and co-edited Mapping Istanbul (2009),
which address different perspectives to interpret the built environment through
aerial images in the former, and maps in the latter. Her recent research
focuses on the material culture of modernity in the second half of the 20th
century in Turkey. As a programmer, she problematizes the efficiency of ‘formats’
in developing a true exchange of ideas and knowledge.
