Celebrated as an innovator, Nova Bhattacharya’s powerful and humanistic creations breathe rich life into the spectrum between classical bharatanatyam and contemporary dance. She has created work for leading Canadian companies including Toronto Dance Theatre and Dancemakers. Described as a "dancer and choreographer of fierce intelligence and integrity with a delightfully wicked sense of humour..." (The Dance Current), she plays a leading role in expanding the boundaries of the art form with her company, Nova Dance. The company’s body of work includes Bhattacharya’s creations as well as works commissioned from leading choreographers; has toured extensively from coast to coast in Canada as well as in Germany and Japan; and has been nominated for 5 Dora Mavor Moore Awards. She is the 2012 recipient of the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award for outstanding artistic achievement in dance and a nominee for the 2016 K. M. Hunter Award for dance. She is currently serving as the President of the Toronto Arts Council’s Board of Directors.
