Choosing a Host City

Past Congresses

The 98th ISPA Congress, Reimagining, will be held in Melbourne, Australia. From May 30 – June 4, 2016 we invite you to reimagine the future of performing arts culture.

Disrupt. Innovate. Originate.
What does the future of performing arts look like? What can it be?
What do we want it to be?

A series of provocations through performance and keynotes that invite rigorous interrogation of contemporary performance culture.  Inspirational, unexpected stories. Creative partnerships. Extraordinary memories.

The Congress will be hosted in the heart of Melbourne’s vibrant cultural precinct at Arts Centre Melbourne, where you’ll experience superb, state of the art venues that host bold, genre defying contemporary practice. Often thought of as a gateway to the Asia-Pacific region, Melbourne is Australia’s most multilingual city - including nearly half a million native speakers of Asian languages. A sophisticated, walkable city Melbourne is a foodie haven. Discover hidden laneways, bars and arts spaces. Visit stunning wineries only a short drive away.

Australia has an arts sector with enviable depth and range and Melbourne’s cultural calendar is in full flight during this time. All within easy walking distance from Congress venues you will be able to immerse yourself in:

  • exclusive showings of new work
  • acclaimed independent work
  • flagship performing arts companies
  • major event The Light in Winter directed by arts luminary Robyn Archer
  • Australian Centre for Contemporary Art
  • Australian Centre for the Moving Image
  • Melbourne’s architecturally  iconic, modern piazza – Federation Square
  • National Gallery of Victoria
  • Melbourne International Jazz Festival

After work, stay to play…

The 98th ISPA Congress is the perfect excuse to extend your stay in Melbourne and explore more of Australia. Iconic Australian destinations include The Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, Kakadu National Park, and The Great Ocean Road.

Consider a visit to Hobart, Tasmania - home of the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) which has firmly established Hobart as a must-see destination since it opened in 2011. MONA hosts annual festivals MONA FOMA and DARK MOFO which hold cult status on the Australian cultural calendar.

Or join colleagues and friends in Sydney for Vivid Sydney 2016. The Sydney harbour brims with light, and the best contemporary music artists in town take centre stage for Vivid LIVE.
