Visit the Region Trips available to delegates and partners after the Congress: The 90 minute journey by train to Edinburgh takes delegates through some of the most romantic land and seascapes in the United Kingdom. Lindisfarne (Holy Island), where St Cuthbert first brought Christianity to Europe, boasts both a romantic 16th century castle on a rocky outcrop and also a dramatic 9th century priory. Hadrian's Wall -- built to keep the warring Scots out of an England controlled in the 4th century by Rome -- spans the country through 55 miles of hills from the Irish Sea in the West to the mouth of the Tyne in the East. The Wall and some of its forts are well preserved and a number of artefacts of Roman life including recreation of the forts and homes of the Roman era are a must-see attraction for visitors to the region. Durham Cathedral -- on its spectacular commanding site above the City of Durham -- is renowned as the UK's most beautiful and best preserved Cathedral from its completion in 1135. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is as spiritually inspiring as it is steeped in history. Scotland, Ireland and London all lie within easy (1-hour flight) reach of Gateshead/Newcastle, and the fourteen countries around the North and Baltic seas (where at the time of the congress many will be enjoying their summer 'midnight sun') are also mostly easily reached.
