THE ORGANIZATION
The Corporation operates two concert halls, Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall (MH-RTH). The Corporation is a not-for-profit organization but operates as a business entity. The Corporation receives no government funding to operate and as such must be self sufficient in its operations and programming.

Massey Hall was voted Canada's "Best Live Music Venue Over 1,500 Seats" by the Canadian Music Industry for three consecutive years. In 2003, Massey Hall won the Venue of the Year Award, presented at the Canadian Industry Awards for the seventh consecutive year. Massey Hall, a 2753 seat facility, celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1994.

Roy Thomson Hall opened in the fall of 1982 and has hosted hundreds of world-renowned artists over the years. Roy Thomson Hall is Canada’s premier concert hall with 2,630 seats and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is its primary tenant.

THE POSITION
The Director, Operations and Administration, is responsible for providing sound leadership and management to the Corporation. This exciting and unique opportunity will leverage your leadership and management skills and front-of-house costumer service expertise while providing a working environment that truly enhances an entertainment and performance loving lifestyle. The Director, Operations & Administration is a key representative of the organization and is an active advocate with other arts organizations and stakeholders.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Develop, evaluate and maintain an effective organization capable of meeting objectives; provide coaching and training to improve performance
  • Oversee and manage patron services including front of house, music store, food and beverage, and ticketing operations
  • Direct the operations of the Corporation in a manner that optimizes the economic utilization of resources including building operations (security, parking, cleaning), telecom, IT and HR
  • Oversee union negotiations
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate working relationship with the management of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and all “clients” of the Halls
  • Maintain an active involvement in the business and entertainment communities to ensure that the Corporation is appropriately represented such that existing relationships are enhanced and new opportunities are developed
  • In consultation with the President and Board of Governors, develop financial, operational and human resource policies and practices
  • Assist the President in an effective communication with the Board of Governors, staff, volunteers, tenants, patrons and the public at large

CANDIDATE EXPERIENCE & CHARACTERISTICS

  • University degree or equivalent experiential record with minimum ten years of relevant senior-level management in a complex, service-related business or sector such as a cultural organization, retail, hospitality or leisure industry or building management
  • Able to extend and translate the Corporate brand identity by consistently maintaining to high standards the experience of MH-RTH had by all, including patrons and staff
  • Established senior contacts at local business communities a significant plus
  • Proficiency with computers and appropriate software such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
  • Able to lead with the independence of thought and urgency required to be effective in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment; able to execute with small teams or alone
  • Able to manage and monitor several projects simultaneously while maintaining superior attention to details; able to adjust style in response to changing priorities and opportunities or challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with both staff and stakeholders; a true people person, team-oriented, energetic, enthusiastic and positive in a demanding environment. Must maintain professional demeanor and highest standards of ethics and integrity in all professional relationships.
  • Strong analytical and creative, yet relevant, problem-solving skills that combine in the ability to leverage diverse functional skills
  • Significant and exceptional project management skills and experience; strengths in organization, task and people management
  • Highly articulate and flexible with exceptional relationship management and team building skills; Excellent ability to lead, instill pride and to push effective innovation as needed

COMPENSATION
A competitive compensation package including base salary, benefits and bonus will be provided.
