The University of California, Berkeley invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Cal Performances, available in summer 2009.

Cal Performances, the performing arts presenter at the University of California, Berkeley, produces and presents acclaimed artists and ensembles in more than 125 performances annually. Director Robert Cole has announced that the upcoming Cal Performances season—2008/09—will be his last as director. Under his 23 years of leadership, Cal Performances has become one of the country's leading performing arts organizations. A search for Mr. Cole's successor is underway.

Cal Performances presents classical and modern dance, opera, vocal and instrumental recitals, early music, chamber music and orchestra, contemporary music, jazz, theater, speakers' series and dozens of other events. Performances take place in UC Berkeley campus venues, and reach an audience of 150,000 from the University campus and communities throughout the greater Bay Area.

Cal Performances serves the community through a well-developed program of arts education. SchoolTime sponsors performances for school children. Cal Performances in the Classroom is a signature education program created with the Berkeley Unified School District through participation in the Kennedy Center's Partners in Education program. Cal Performances also offers AileyCamp, a nationally acclaimed six-week summer dance program for at-risk youth, which was created by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

Cal Performances oversees Student Musical Activities (SMA) at the University. Comprised of UC Jazz Ensembles, UC Choral Ensembles, and the Cal Band, SMA offers students a rich program of extra-curricular musical instruction and performance opportunities as well as experience in student leadership and arts administration.

Cal Performances has an annual operating budget of $15.5 million, with a full-time staff of 68, a part-time staff of 110, and more than 200 volunteers. A Board of Trustees provides oversight, guidance, advocacy and financial support for programs and activities.

The Position
The Director of Cal Performances provides the overall artistic vision, executive leadership, direction and management for the organization and ensures that Cal Performances achieves its goals for artistic excellence, financial stability, audience development, and community engagement. Supported by a strong senior staff, the Director is responsible and accountable for all aspects of the operation, including planning; programming; marketing and public relations; budgeting and financial management; board development; fundraising; facilities; and human resource management. The Director represents Cal Performances within the University and with external communities. < o:p>

The Director of Cal Performances reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the University. The Director works closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure the continued artistic vitality and financial strength of the organization.

Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be a proven leader who combines a thorough knowledge of the performing arts with a strong record of success in programming, presenting, audience development, facilities management, and fundraising. That person will have a broad and compelling vision for the role of the performing arts and the performing arts presenter in a university environment.

The successful candidate will have superb interpersonal, communication, supervisory and financial management skills. He or she will be able to maintain a rigorous schedule that includes evening and weekend performances and events. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 10 years experience as a chief executive or senior manager in a performing arts organization. A Bachelor's degree and formal arts education, preferably in music, are required; professional training and experience as a performing artist is preferred. Experience working in a university environment will be considered an asset.
