University of Richmond Modlin Center for the Arts Marketing Director University of Richmond, VA The Marketing Director of the Modlin Center for the Arts manages and oversees all of the traditional responsibilities of marketing including publications, website, publicity and public relations, in addition to all ticketing operations. The Marketing Director is a senior manager who reports to the Executive Director for marketing responsibilities, and the Associate Director for ticketing operations. The position manages and supervises a staff of 22 part-time professional and student employees in the box office and several part-time student publicity assistants in the office. Responsibilities Marketing
- Design, oversee and direct of a comprehensive subscription and single ticket sales campaign for the Modlin Center Great Performances Series.
- Manage part-time program editor
- Manage and supervise student marketing assistants and interns.
- Manage Modlin Center Administrative Assistant with marketing related tasks. (Approximately 25% of AA weekly load.)
- Design and direct comprehensive publicity and sales campaigns for Modlin Center events.
- Manage annual advertising/printing/mailing budget of $225,000.
- Maintain the verbal and visual identity of the Center as presented to the University and Richmond communities and beyond.
- Oversee the application of information technology and the World Wide Web as marketing tools; oversee design, edit and maintain web pages, including ticketing portal and Patron Mail site; develop systematic means of electronic communication in areas of marketing and communicating to the media and general public.
- Develop and conduct market research to learn more about the Center’s audience; devise strategies to improve and enhance results.
- Establish strong relationships with local media advertising representatives; negotiate advertising contracts and trade agreements.
- Oversee advertisement design, production and implementation.
- Explore new and creative advertising to attract subscribers and increase audience attendance numbers.
- Design and direct the production process for publications, from initial concept to final productions, including subscription brochures, program books, Stall Weekly, monthly calendar postcards, other direct mail, posters, signs and fliers.
- Design and direct the production of displays for point-of-purchase sales, community events and promotional opportunities.
- Provide media with press releases of university-wide events.
- Facilitate interviews between the press and artists.
- Explore broadcast media for new ways to market programs.
- Serve as marketing liaison to special projects such as campus-wide marketing and calendar initiatives.
- Communicate with clear understanding the terms outlined in artists’ contracts concerning recordings, photography and proper billing in ads.
Ticketing Operations
- Supervision and processing of all subscription and single ticket sales and orders, including house holds, group sales, artist holds, student reservations and VIP customer ticket sales; reconciliation and deposit of daily receipts from six student employees covering three shifts a day, five days a week and during performances; generation of accounting and sales reports for $500,000 in income annually.
- Manage part-time box office manager
- Management of box office staff, including hiring, training and supervision of two (2) part-time professional and 20 student staff covering 20 shifts a week.
- Maintain knowledge of Center’s ticketing system including implementation of the latest updates to current system and knowledge of new enhancements; oversee the system’s daily management; supervise training of new and returning employees.
- Work with University Systems Administrator & Computer Operations staff on maintenance and upkeep of Modlin ticketing server.
- Research and implement new ticketing technologies for Modlin Center Ticketing Operations.M
Other
- Oversee office student administrative assistants and student interns working on administrative and marketing projects on a daily basis.
- Work with faculty to incorporate arts events in their course syllabus.
- Act as liaison between front of house management and box office staff before and during performances.
- Oversee concession sales table for artists who travel with items to sell at their performances; work with management companies that send items in advance; settle with the artists or managers after events.
- Attend Center events and maintain a personal presence.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies:
- Must have an understanding of the performing arts and related terminology.
- Must have extensive marketing or sales experience including ability to conduct market research and develop creative advertising campaigns.
- Must possess strong organizational and communication skills and be able to learn and manage various computer platforms.
- Must have strong knowledge of internet technologies including internet direct mail marketing.
- Must possess some basic graphic design skills
- Must have proven track record in managing a major box office operation including financial management, accounting procedures and an understanding of ticketing technology.
- Must be able to diplomatically manage the diverse needs of the Center's various clients and must be able to approach challenging situations with enthusiasm, humor and a positive attitude
Education: Minimum Bachelors degree with training in arts marketing. Experience: Minimum 5 years professional experience in marketing, arts management or related field.
