Music in the Morning Concert Society, currently in its 23rd year, is a multi-facetted music presenting organization encompassing a distinctive morning concert series, an educational concert series, an early evening concert series tailored to the downtown live/work crowd, a family-oriented music series, as well as burgeoning outreach programs. Music in the Morning inspires its audiences with masterpieces of the past, while challenging them with music of our time performed by the finest local, national and international talent – all at affordable ticket prices. Known for its uncompromised quality, intimate setting, and friendly rapport between artist and audience, Music in the Morning is reputed across the continent for its entrepreneurial spirit, as demonstrated by successfully finding unique, untapped niches in concert presenting, and for developing loyal, invested, culturally curious audiences. With sell-out crowds and an ever-increasing subscription base of more than 1500 concertgoers, Music in the Morning holds a unique place in the city of Vancouver’s cultural life. Music in the Morning is about to undertake an important organizational shift. In January 2009 the founding director, who has until this time been in the role of both artistic and executive director, will begin to focus entirely on Music in the Morning’s artistic activities. She will continue to hold the position of artistic director. The organization is poised for growth and is seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial, vision-oriented executive director to lead the organization into this next period of development. Among Music in the Morning’s top priorities are:
- To select an executive director who can lead Music in the Morning forward
- To strategically plan for growth
- To expand fundraising efforts and foster program growth
Major Responsibilities
- In close collaboration with the Board, strategic planning and implementation including the development of new programs and the re-envisioning of some existing programs
- Fundraising, including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals, corporations, foundations, and government granting bodies
- Sensitively and effectively managing the leadership transition
- Managing the budget and ensuring the fiscal health of the organization
- Providing guidance and leadership for the entire office, including overseeing all day to day office administration and the management of staff
- Overseeing all concert administration and production, realizing the high standards of production that the organization is known for in the eyes of both the audience and artists
- Developing the existing brand promise and ensuring that it is embodied in everything the organization does and presents, including marketing and communications materials, patron services, artist services, donor relations, etc.
- Attendance at all concerts and special events
Necessary Qualifications
- Proven track record with creating new programs and seeing them through from idea to delivery, including raising the necessary resources and staying on time and on budget
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the willingness to share ideas and thoughts, to accept and act on feedback, to have respect for where the organization has come from and its potential moving forward
- Strong sense of marketing and communications strategies and methods, including audience development strategies and collateral creation. Experience with sales and prospecting an asset
- Significant experience developing and realizing successful fundraising campaigns and programs, including successful solicitations of $10,000 and up
- A clear understanding of the business model for arts presenting, including the need to be artistically innovative and relevant while remaining fiscally responsible, as well as grasping the relationships between presenter, artist, and audience
- Creativity, cultural curiosity, enthusiasm for and knowledge of the arts both nationally and internationally
- At least 3 years experience effectively managing staff and/or consultants
- Highly collegial and collaborative spirit and the ability to foster a team-oriented environment as demonstrated by past work experiences
- Experience with and sensitivity to major leadership transitions an asset
- A minimum of 3 years successful Board management
- A bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years experience in the field of arts and culture or not-for-profit management
