The creative development of In the Shadow of the Dragon, a new work of performance inspired by ritual and ceremony, created through collaboration between Strange Fruit (Australia) and Noreum Machi (Korea). The symbiotic benefits of this project include the very real opportunity for dynamic and meaningful cultural diversity through creative partnership. This project will focus on performance as a ritual with specific reference to Shamanism, trance, and transformation. The mesmerizing, hypnotic swaying of the Strange Fruit poles is inherently trace-like and stunning score played live by Noreum Machi and consisting largely of voice, percussion and traditional oboe, with the bending notes and wailing of voices complimenting the swirling dance of the poles. Korean traditional dance by sensual and ethereal floating quality of the traditional female dancers and more physical Pulmul dance by Noreum Machi will be added to the poles and performance to open up a completely new physical performance paradigm.
