When BCMG premiered the extraordinary Rumpelstiltskin in 2009/10 it was an immediate hit and, an unclassifiable and entirely new kind of work. This was a piece that its creative team (composer David Sawer, director Richard Jones, designer Stewart Laing) had wanted to create for a decade, exploring new territory between music, dance, theatre and mime. David Sawer always intended Rumpelstiltskin to be the second half of a double bill – mad boy, clever girl – with another new work, The Lighthouse Keepers (‘mad boy’ - a kind of ‘on-stage radio play’ with two actors), forming the first half. This dark claustrophobic tale will be initially created separately by BCMG in 2013 – and our pitch is then to produce & tour, with international partners, the first performances of the complete staged double bill in 2014/15. Rumpelstiltskin, (‘clever girl’) demands to be revived and seen internationally and The Lighthouse Keepers promises to be equally enthralling. Delivering David Sawer’s original and compelling vision for ‘mad boy, clever girl’ is one of the most exciting ambitions in BCMG’s 25-year history.
