Extracts From The Underground is an original South African work of music theater, for live performance and installation that personalizes the human experience within the anonymity of the industrial mining complex. Over the course of the performance, the audience embarks on a journey of descent: traveling from ground level into the deepest reaches of the earth’s rock?face, and so into the hidden strata of South African history. At di?erent points in the vertical journey, the elevator comes to a halt allowing a group of miners to tell their stories of life and labor underground. This work is relevant both locally and globally; whilst the work o?ers a unique insight into a South African miner’s experience, it also epitomises the current climate of alienation between worker and mine-owner the world over. The work creates an entry point for civil society to engage with this life normally hidden from view.
