Contemporary fusion of classical opera, ballet, and theatre
HOMEBODY is a special collaboration between ODD Continent and its partners Dutch National Ballet, Noord Nederlands Toneel and the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. Adapted from the play by Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner (Angels in America, Lincoln) about a young Western woman who travels to Afghanistan to retrieve the body of her mother, HOMEBODY re-imagines the spoken drama for five ballet dancers, two opera vocalists and an actor. A new score by Dutch platinum-selling recording artist Colin Benders (aka Kyteman) features alongside the classical choreography and contemporary storytelling of Australian choreographer Remi Wörtmeyer and Scottish director-librettist Malcolm Rock.
Kushner describes HOMEBODY as a story about travel and learning through an encounter with Otherness. Its characters and situations lend themselves to a multidisciplinary production that matches the classical stage arts – opera, dance and drama – with Kushner’s inimitable and very modern prose. This combination of elements results in an exhilarating whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
