Nicolas Shumway

Nicolas ShumwayNicolas Shumway is the Tomas Rivera Regents Professor of Spanish American Literature at UT-Austin. Seven years ago, he came to UT from Yale University, where he had taught for fourteen years and attained the rank of full professor. For the last five and half years, he has also been the director of the UT Institute of Latin American Studies, now know as the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies, thanks to a generous endowment gift from Joe and Teresa Long announced last November. He has also been a visiting professor in Brazil on four different occasions. Last spring he completed a semester-long appointment in history and literature as a Fulbright Professor at the University of Sao Paulo.

Prof. Shumway has published widely on Latin American literature and intellectual history, with particular emphasis on Argentina. His book, The Invention of Argentina, won international recognition and was selected by The New York Times as one of the notable books of the year. Its Spanish translation was chosen by two Buenos Aires papers, El Cronista de Buenos Aires and Página 12, as one of the best books of 1995. He is also the author of a Spanish language textbook, now in its fourth edition. Prof. Shumway lectures widely in both the United States and Latin America.

In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Shumway is an accomplished musician. He holds a BA in Music and has sung with several professional choirs, including seven years with the Roger Wagner Chorale and two with the Music of the Baroque Ensemble of Chicago. With Roger Wagner, he made several recordings and participated in two national tours, a tour of England and Israel, and another of the Soviet Union. He has also held potions as organist/choirmaster in several churches. Las year he was the piano accompanist for baritone Joao Louren¨o in a recital at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC that featured several songs by Argentine composer, Carlos Gustavino.
