ISPA member organization Bang on a Can, a multi-faceted contemporary classical music organization based in New York City, hosted its annual Bang on a Can Benefit at City Winery on May 27, 2014. This year they honored Mary Lou Aleskie, ISPA Board Chair-Elect and Executive Director of the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven.

Bang on a Can is exceptionally excited to pay tribute to a great friend and colleague, Mary Lou Aleskie. Mary Lou has invited us to many parties and asked us to bring our instruments. These parties have come in all shapes and sizes and have taken place all across the country. We have been honored to present our unique brand of innovative music-making to each of them.
As the President of La Jolla Music Society, she invited us to southern California; as Executive Director of Da Camera of Houston, she invited us to Texas; and now as Executive Director of the renowned International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven she’s invited us up to Connecticut many times, and our visits are always inspiring and the programs inspired; and as a co-chair of the (International Society for the Performing Arts) ISPA Congress in New York, she’s invited us uptown.
We are thrilled to finally have a party where we can feature her! Mary Lou’s continued support for our work and her dedication to so many other remarkable artists and arts professionals and the field as a whole is indeed notable, but that’s not all.
Equally notable are the incessant questions she asks of all of us, the challenges she poses, the critical effort she requires of her peers. She has valuable opinions about the art she champions as well as the business of the arts, and she offers them freely and fearlessly. The energy and spirit she puts into these relationships is off the chart. And so is the admiration we have for her as a leader and a visionary and trusted friend.
