The President and CEO of Place des Arts, Mr. Marc Blondeau, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Clothilde Cardinal as Director of Programming for the largest performing arts centre in Montreal and in the country, with its six performance halls. The Artistic and Executive Co-Director of the Danse Danse organization since 2000, Ms. Cardinal will join the Place des Arts team on August 25.
Looking to the future after 50 years of major achievements and transformations, Place des Arts—which, each year, presents over 1,000 performances and private events at the heart of the city of Montreal Quartier des spectacles (Entertainment District)—is aiming to optimize performance hall use and attendance, maintain and develop partnerships for projects of all kinds in order to enrich and diversify its programming, and renew its access-to-the-arts program. These are challenges the new director will work to meet, collaborating closely with the programming team, resident companies—Les Grands Ballets canadiens de Montréal, the DUCEPPE theatre company, and the Opéra de Montréal—, show producers, festivals taking place on the Place des Arts site, artists, the OSM—a long-standing partner of the institution—, the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, and several other partners.
“With over 30 years of experience on the performing arts scene—more than half of which have been in management and programming capacities—, a wide network of contacts at home and abroad, thorough knowledge of the issues show producers currently face, and a constant focus on audience and artist needs, I am convinced that Ms. Cardinal, who is already recognized as a leader in her field, has all of the expertise required to further and properly position our organization’s vital mission in today’s changing artistic reality,” said Mr. Blondeau. “She will be able to rely on the collaboration of all of Place des Arts’ various departments.”
Before working at Danse Danse, Ms. Cardinal held such positions as Project Director for Théâtre UBU in Montreal, Artistic Director at Théâtre de la Ville in Longueuil, and Assistant to the General and Artistic Director at the Festival de théâtre des Amériques, among others.
