The São Paulo State Youth Orchestra makes its inaugural tour to the United States, presented in New York. Founded in 1979, the orchestra has been since 2009 a major initiative of ISPA member organization Santa Marcelina Cultura, which provides leadership and administration for critical music education institutions on behalf of the State of São Paulo. Since 2010, Santa Marcelina Cultura and The Juilliard School have collaborated in over a dozen educational projects in São Paulo and New York. Juilliard Pre-College pianist Tengku Irfan is the featured soloist for this special concert.
Santa Marcelina Cultura's Artistic Director and ISPA member Paulo Zuben will be traveling to New York with the Orchestra. He has been leading changes and creating new opportunities for Brazilian musicians in São Paulo. Delegates at the Bogotá 2014 ISPA Congress had a chance to hear directly from him during the session on the topic of art that transforms.
The orchestra performs on March 22nd at Kennedy Center and on March 25th at Alice Tully Hall, presented by The Juilliard School, with Cláudio Cruz as conductor and Juilliard pre-college pianist Tengku Irfan as featured soloist. Under the direction of maestro Cláudio Cruz, the orchestra has toured throughout Brazil and performed in France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
