Artistic Director Jude Kelly at Southbank Centre announced the launch of the UK’s first fully surround-sound virtual reality concert performance, inviting members of the public in for nine minute tour of the orchestra. Fans will be able to wear high-tech glasses, headsets and headphones to experience being on stage with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen as they perform the third movement of Sibelius’ Symphony No 5.

Announcing the plans, along with a full year of music at the Southbank Centre, Kelly said the orchestra have “absolutely been the pioneers of this area of work in classical music”, saying she believed it is essential for the venue to cater for a generation who exist in a digital world.
