Layla and Majnun Begins US Tour
Tuesday, October 18, 2016
Today, we’re highlighting Layla and Majnun by Mark Morris Dance Group, recently introduced to ISPA delegates at the Pitch New Works session of the New York 2016 Congress.
The new work is set to a chamber arrangement of Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov’s 1908 opera, Layla and Majnun, the first in the Muslim world. Based on the 7th century Arabian tale, it features revered mugham singers Alim and Fargana Qasimov, the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Silk Road Ensemble sharing the stage designed by Howard Hodgkin. The work explores the themes of love, madness and mysticism through Morris’ musical choreography and the profound depth of sorrow and ecstasy of the mugham style of improvisatory song.
The work had its world premiere on September 30th, 2016 which kicked off a US tour, since performing at ISPA member organizations Meany Center for the Performing Arts (Seattle, Washington) and University Musical Society (Ann Arbor, Michigan)! Congratulations to all involved! Read the review in New York Times.
