Today, we’re highlighting Death Become Life by Ensemble Mik Nawooj, recently introduced to ISPA delegates at the Pitch New Works session of the New York 2017 ISPA Congress. Death Become Life tells a story of loss, yearning, and transformation by featuring all the main components of Hip-Hop (music, dance, and graffiti) and embracing it’s origin by recreating an immersive underground party.
We spoke with Ensemble Mik Nawooj’s Artistic Director, JooWan Kim, who caught us up on all the project’s exciting developments and a recent return to New York for Apollo Music Cafe (relive by watching the video below!).
EMN is doing a mini tour of the concert version of Death Become Life prior to our July 15 premiere at Yerba Buena Gardens Festival in SF. Our first stop was at Apollo Music Cafe, the sister venue of the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY, on March 4. The sold out performance was met with enthusiastic reception and was filmed by the noted viral content platform Upworthy.
The success of the music-only version proved our idea in the scalability of the work to be true. This scalability is a crucial element of “Death Become Life” which emerged in preparation for the ISPA Pitch New Works presentation and renders a versatile aesthetic that can be easily adapted in various settings.
Our second stop will be at Tempe Center for the Arts in Arizona for the Disrupt FEST as the headliner of the night on March 18.”
With a proven track record for success, ISPA’s Pitch New Works program continues to assist works in development with securing touring dates, regional agents, co-commissions, premieres, and more.
