News & Press: "Pitch New Works" in Action

Papa's Time Machine Ongoing Developments

Monday, April 3, 2017   (0 Comments)

Today, we’re highlighting Papa’s Time Machine produced by PaPa Puppet Cultural Development Co, Ltd, introduced to ISPA delegates at the Pitch New Works session of the New York 2016 ISPA Congress.

Papa’s Time Machine is a piece of contemporary theater inspired by the creator and director Maleonn’s relationship with his father as he developed Alzheimer’s and the related amnesia. Through the use of life size puppets, the work explores a bond between father and son amidst this shifting reality.

We spoke with PaPa Puppet Cultural Development Co, Ltd’s General Manager, Shane Huang, who caught us up on the project’s developments and its 2017 performances in Beijing:

The 2017 plan of Papa’s Time Machine starts with 10 performances in Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, Beijing, China. Before stepping into the foreign market, we have decided to do more shows at home to improve both the skill of the stage technical team and the storyline itself.

After participating ISPA, we have built up connections with many theater professionals around the world who keep in touch with us. We invited some of them to come to Shanghai and watch the October performance last year. It was then when they offered many valuable suggestions regarding the work. Hence we slow down the oversea tour plan, believing it would be better for us. So far, there is no further performance plan of the show for 2017 except for the Beijing tour. However, the team would do some study on puppetry, as well as workshops and storyline analyze salons. Hopefully the show could get prepared for a higher-standard market and audience next year or even sooner.”

With a proven track record for success, ISPA’s Pitch New Works program continues to assist works in development with securing touring dates, regional agents, co-commissions, premieres, and more.
