Catherine Bottrill is an energy and climate change researcher working in the areas of measurement, policy and practice to reduce carbon emissions. She was the lead researcher of the First Step report, a scoping study of the annual greenhouse gas emissions across the UK music industry, undertaken by Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute (www.eci.ox.ac.uk) on behalf of Julie’s Bicycle (www.juliesbicycle.com).  Since First Step she has been involved in a number of further research studies for Julie’s Bicycle on CD packaging, audience travel and touring.  Catherine is currently doing her PhD research at Surrey University with the RESOLVE research group (www.surrey.ac.uk) on the opportunities and constraints of the music industry to engage in the social transformation towards low carbon living.  In addition, Catherine is the co-creator of web-based software for UK home (www.imeasure.org.uk) and business (www.smeasure.org.uk) building energy management, which is being piloted by a number of cultural organisations (i.e. venues and offices). There are plans to extend the software to other global regions beginning in 2010.  She did a Masters in Environmental Management at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and has undertaken research in the US, India and Pakistan as well as the UK.
