2960 Broadway (at 116th St.) MC 1801

Box Office: 212-854-7799
Tickets: $20
Hailing
from Queenstown, Bongani Ndodana (b. 1975) is the most prominent young South
African
composer on the scene. His remarkable music combines
a post-modern eclecticism with the sounds of his African childhood
and heritage. Sons of the Great Tree refers to Ndodana's ancestral "totem
name" Mthikhulu (Great Tree). Rainmaking remembers Queen
Nodjadji V (1936-2001), the beloved Rain Queen of the Bantu-speaking
Lovedu
tribe, and heir to a 400-year-old matriarchal monarchy invested
with magical rainmaking powers. The Hintsa of Hintsa's Dances
was a Xhosa
chief who fought against the British army as they swept through
South Africa in the early 1800's: he was finally captured and
imprisoned in a penal island just off Cape Town (the same one
later occupied
by Nelson Mandela.) When he first heard the sound of British
bagpipes from his cell, it is said that he thought they were
the wailing
cries
of babies.

Tuesday, Jan 17, 7:30 pm
Details on-line
Since 1997, Imani Winds has been expanding the bounds of the traditional
wind quintet. This young ensemble of African/Latin American heritage
has quickly established a distinct presence in the classical music
scene and indeed in the contemporary music and jazz world as well.
The name
Imani, which means "faith" in Swahili, embodies the spirit of the ensemble--a
spirit evident in their dynamic playing, critically-acclaimed recordings, innovative
programming, and outreach programs which have inspired communities throughout
the country. The first of their two recordings on Koch International Classics,
The Classical Underground,
received a 2005 Grammy Award nomination.

landscape. BalletLab presents their signature award-winning work featuring
six dancers, live turntable composition and stark visual set design.
Skidding, sliding, and crashing into a world of body bags, pain, healing,
reality and unreality, Amplification examines the thresholds of the
human body’s response to sound, light, and physical impact.

at globalFEST at the Public Theater
425 Lafayette St, btwn Astor Place and East 4th Street, East Village
Sat&Sun, Jan 21&22, 7:50pm
40 minute performance
Worldbeats previews Djellabah Groove, a spirited, percussive
coupling of music and dance: three tap artists and a four piece band
directed
by Graham Haynes. This multi-cultural ensemble highlights the improvisational
dynamic of each form in a communal celebration of flamenco, tap, and
North African musical genres. Mediterranean-born Butterfly’s spoken word
(in French and English) ponders a rootless troubadour’s identity in our
contemporary age.

Seán Curran Company (international representation)
at Danspace Project
Second Ave at East 11th Street, East Village
One hour shared showcase with Urban Bush Women
Poetically pairing the classical with the contemporary, Aria is choreographed
to the opera music of Handel and the recorded confessional apologies
of anonymous individuals. A response to the lush ornamental, romantic
music, Aria is a choreographic exploration of formality, classicism,
and architecture as metaphors for regret, longing, and sorrow.
