ISPA's 55th Annual Conference
7 - 10 December 2002

New York City

“TECHNOLOGY, eh? Can’t live without it, can’t live with it.
Scientific progress has undoubtedly made life better. Yet
it a has also imperiled our planet and now (thanks to genetic engineering) threatens the very nature of humanity.”
Richard Morrison
The Times of London
Friday September 20 2002

In 1995, the ISPA membership gathered in Toronto to explore the brave new world of technology. In December 2002, our annual conference took another, albeit different look at technology. We explored how new technologies are changing both society and the consequent effects on the performing arts. Our speakers included leaders and opinion makers in directing, composing, video and soundscape. All who are creating works that incorporate new thinking and new media.

Conference sessions explored and featured:

  • Technology and it’s impact on society
  • Demonstrations of the use of new technologies in performance
  • New and innovative formats in the distribution of the arts
  • Practical issues of copyright and performing rights

This was the first New York Conference to move outside of the confines of a hotel ballroom. Attendees were treated to a variety of exciting spaces, including the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Lincoln Center.

ProEx was the new manifestation of the Exhibit Hall. Sunday, the conference was devoted to Professional Exchange, hence ProEx. Participants had the opportunity to meet, network and do business in the relaxed atmosphere of The Supper Club. Within ProEx, Robyn Archer hosted a challenging Pitch Session. There, a number of carefully selected groups made short presentations on upcoming projects.

ISPA New York 2002 aimed to break the mold of previous New York conferences. Our goal was to provide a fun and stimulating environment for your business exchange, entertain you and assure each of you leaves with at least one new idea.
