Benson Puah | 2013 Patrick Hayes Award Recipient

Benson Puah received the 2013 Patrick Hayes Award at the New York 2013 Congress, The Culture of Innovation.  View other ISPA Award winners.

Benson PuahBenson Puah is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Esplanade Co Ltd (TECL), responsible for the overall management and artistic direction of Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Singapore’s national performing arts centre. He is concurrently the CEO of the National Arts Council (NAC), a statutory board spearheading the development of the arts in Singapore.

An honours graduate in Hotel, Catering and Tourism Administration from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom, he spent the first 20 years of his career pioneering hospitality projects with leading luxury hotels across the globe.

Benson then ventured into the public sector, as Chief Executive of Sentosa Development Corporation, repositioning Sentosa as an attractive resort getaway and was involved in the master planning of the prestigious Sentosa Cove residential development. He then became CEO of Temasia Health Pte Ltd, the international business arm of Health Corporation of Singapore.  

He is a long serving Chair of the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres (AAPPAC), and actively serves on various boards and committees, reflecting his diverse interests in education, healthcare, hospitality and urban planning. His deep involvement with the arts include appointments in The National Art Gallery, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Arts School amongst many others.  

In 2008, Benson was the first Asian to be elected as Chair of the New York-based International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA). In April 2010, he was awarded the Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government for his contributions to the arts in Singapore.
