Since becoming the Metropolitan Opera’s sixteenth general manager in August 2006, Peter Gelb has launched a series of initiatives to revitalize the Met that have had a profound global impact. Perhaps the most trailblazing of his new initiatives has been The Met: Live in HD, a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning series of live performance transmissions to movie theaters around the world. Updating the Met’s repertory with new productions of classic operas and modern masterpieces is among Gelb’s priorities, and during his tenure, the Met has presented more than 40 new stagings by some of the world’s great theater directors. Gelb has initiated a program to commission new operas, offered dress rehearsals free of charge to the public, created an immensely popular $20 Rush Tickets program, and provided free live transmissions of the opening-night performance to giant screens in Times Square. An award-winning producer of films, recordings, radio broadcasts, telecasts, concert events, operas, and festivals, from 1995 until joining the Met, Gelb was president of Sony Classical.
