I Made Sidia | Speaker
I Made Sidia is a Balinese wayang puppeteer and one of Bali's most acclaimed shadow artists. He was trained as a classical Wayang Dalang, and is an accomplished Topeng (mask) dancer, choreographer, teacher and gamelan musician. He graduated in 1992 with a degree in Balinese Theatre (Pedalangan) from the Indonesian State College of Arts (STSI) Denpasar Bali in Performance and Script. In 2010, he was awarded an MFA degree from the Indonesian State College of Arts (ISI) Solo/ Surakarta Program in Theatre.
Made is currently the foremost exponent of contemporary Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry) in Bali as well as Wayang Kontemporer which adds electric lighting, music, video projections, and mobile puppeteers.
Made is a senior lecturer at the Performing Arts College ISI in Denpasar, Bali. He is also the Principal of Sanggar Paripurna, a performing arts school in Bona, Gianyar through which he trains a wide range of artists in his local village. He also teaches workshops around the world in traditional Balinese art forms including shadow puppetry, mask and dance.
Made has been acknowledged around the world for his contribution to Balinese culture, and is a passionate advocate of merging traditional and contemporary arts practices. He has worked with significant artists throughout Indonesia and internationally including Larry Reid of Shadowlight Theatre (US), and the internationally acclaimed production of The Theft of Sita with Peter Wilson and Nigel Jamieson (Aus/UK) and Visible Region with Kent Devereux (US). He is currently the Associate Director of the long running and renowned production Bali Agung, currently in its fifth year at Bali Theatre.
