Chief Executive

Jim has been Chief Executive of Live Theatre since 2000, overseeing a major capital refurbishment and has responsibility for the leadership and vision for the company.  Live Theatre has a turnover of £1.8 million and up to 40 staff when in production. In 2013 Live Theatre celebrated 40 years creating new plays on Tyneside with some of Britain’s finest playwrights such as, Lee Hall -The Pitmen Painters, Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour and Billy Elliot, Peter Straughan - Bones, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Wolf Hall and Shelagh Stephenson – Memory of Water, Northern Odyssey and Harriet Martineau Dreams of Dancing.

Live Theatre is also a leader in new ways of creating sustainable income, having developed a series of Social Enterprises to generate additional income for its mission including, award-winning pub The Broad Chare, a new hub for creative businesses The Schoolhouse, and LiveWorks a £10million pound enterprise and cultural project.

Jim trained as a composer and musician, occasionally playing with the Philharmonia Orchestra, and composing for cross arts projects at the South Bank, the ICA, and Dance Umbrella.  Prior to moving to Newcastle to work at Live Theatre Jim was Director of Performing and Combined Arts for Yorkshire Arts Board (now Arts Council Yorkshire).  Jim is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, has been a trustee of The Sage Gateshead, and Leeds College of Music and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters from Northumbria University and awarded an MBE in the 2012 Queens Birthday Honours list.
