SESSION I | Groundbreaking New Facilities: If We Build It, Will They Come? |
Toronto’s cultural renaissance has seen multiple massive new builds, so now we ask: Did we over do it? Are we building for contemporary audiences and if so, do we really need more buildings? Or are we building for how audiences experienced art in the past? Whose agendas are we following? Those trying to revitalize downtowns? Or are buildings born out of true artistic imperatives?

What are the risks of taking a stand politically or socially? Does “playing it safe” attract audiences and funders? At what point does “playing it safe” lead to artistic malaise and eventual loss of audiences and funders? |

SESSION VI | Groundbreaking Audience Development: Diversity for the 21st Century
For the past 25 years artists and presenters have been searching for the "new audience". Is it now time to get beyond orthodox approaches to diversity by looking at who, what and the very way we present the performing arts so that the art on our stages genuinely reflects the audiences that make up our cities? Is it time to have a real discussion about whom the next generation of ticket buyers are and what THEY want. With your participation, this panel discussion will turn the question of diversity on its head. |

SESSION VII | Groundbreaking Programming: Balancing Artistic Choices and the Bottom Line
Should programming lead audiences or should programming follow them? Given the economy, pressure from boards and sponsors, artist fees, diminishing press and increased marketing costs should we just give audiences what they want (what we know will sell) or should we be redoubling our efforts to bring them new work, challenge existing beliefs, shake up the status quo? |

SESSION VIII | Are Arts Audiences an Endangered Species – Globe and Mail headline March 11, 2011
The challenges facing the performing arts are not necessarily life threatening, but they clearly are debilitating and arts administrators spend a large amount of time and effort worrying about the audience and where the audience is and what the audience wants. This concern consists of three fundamental questions: Who are today’s and tomorrow’s audiences? What are they seeking? How do I connect with them? This session is designed to explore these issues in an interactive manner using an innovative focus group approach that will allow you as an observer to directly feed into the discussion with a cross section of the public. The session will be held in an environment that will allow you to view the action and connect directly in real time with the facilitator, who will take your questions and or comments and weave them into the ongoing dialogue with the participants. The session will provide an opportunity to see and hear an audience identify what they seek and how they can be reached.
