Martijn Sanders

Nominating Statement | “He [Martijn Sanders] led Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw for 25 years and now continues to unite cultures through his role as Intendant of the Netherlands China Foundation.”

After graduating with a doctoral degree in management science at the Dutch Economic University, Rotterdam in 1968, Martijn Sanders went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Business Administration at the Universtiy of Michigan, Ann Arbor Michigan two years later.

In 1972, he was appointed Director, Jogchem’s Theatres B.V., where he served until 1982.  Following that, he was the Managing Director Het Concertgebouw N. V. until 2006.  During the latter post, he became chairman of AVRO (Dutch public radio and television broadcasting network) between 1997 and 2005.

His other public and private appointments include serving as a Board member for the Kersjes Foundation (1995); Rembrandt Association (1998); Armando Foudnation (1998); Gergiev Festival, Rotterdam (2006); Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg (2006); Ivy League Circle (2007); Spring Associates BV (2007); Ernst & Young Accountants (2007).  Supervisory Board member for:  Amsterdam ArenA (1999); Algemeen Dagblad Nieuwe Media (2006); Supervisory Council for the collective copyright collecting organizations (2006); Unirobe-Meeüs NV (2007), Non-Executive board member of Intermusica Ltd (2008); Intendant of the Dutch/China Foundation for Cultural Exchange; Member of the artistic committee, Borletto-Buitoni Trust Foundation.  His chairmanships include:  Board of the Bureau for the Promotion of Theatre and Concert Halls (2006); Sahel Opera (2006); Franz Liszt Piano Competition (2006), Erasmus Prize Foundation (2007) and Holland Festival (2009).
