Ruža Pospiš Baldani (Croatian opera singer) was born in Varaždinske Toplice on 25 April 1942.  Throughout her forty-year-long career (1961-2001) she remained loyal to the Zagreb Opera while concurrently acquiring international reputation.  Her ascent started already two years after her debut at the San Carlo in Naples in the role of Venus in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, continued in 1964 at the Holland Festival as Marina in Boris Godunov and at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival as Octavia in the Coronation of Poppea, in 1965 at the Edinburgh Festival in Haydn’s The Fishwives, and in 1966 with her first appearance at the Metropolitan as Maddalena in Rigoletto.
