Barbara G. Fleischman

Barbara G. Fleischman

Barbara G. Fleischman has been a force in the fine arts and performing arts worlds for more than sixty years. Her interest in the stage began with her education in Theater Arts at the University of Michigan and Columbia University. Although she did not choose an acting career, she has used her organizational talent and philanthropic zeal to bolster arts education in many institutions throughout the United States. She was a co-founder of The Hilberry Shakespeare Theater at Wayne State University in Detroit, has served as trustee of Channel Thirteen/WNET, The Actors Company, and the Museum of Television and Radio. As a lifetime trustee of The New York Public Library, she has been a significant benefactor, with continuous leadership at the NYPL Library for the Performing Arts. In the U.K., she has been an enthusiastic supporter of the National Theatre, the London Symphony Orchestra and The British Museum. Mrs. Fleischman is currently serving as a trustee of The Frick Collection, The Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, and The Juilliard School where her energies are devoted to enlarging the visibility and impact of the Drama Division.

In addition to offering ongoing philanthropic support for traditional performance venues, she has thoroughly embraced 21st century technologies, and as a great champion of New York Public Radio, has generously supported the WQXR Campaign to Save Classical Music Radio in New York. Together with her late husband Lawrence A. Fleischman, she has been a major donor to the J. Paul Getty Trust, and the newly created classical outdoor theater at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California, has been named in their honor.
