SESSION III | Tradition and Identity |
How do we maintain traditional art forms and yet particpate artistically in contemprorary society? Identity can be strengthened through conscious awareness and practice of traditions. Furthermore by incorporating elements of traditional work in contemporary literature, theatre, art, dance and film we may often create a sense of belonging to a specific nation, region or ethniticity. Does this commitment to tradition challenge our position in broader global society? |

SESSION IV | New Technology and its influence on Cultural Identity |
The revolution in communications technology has perhaps been the single most significant factor in globalisation. However with the pervasive spread the fears of global homogeneity abound in particular with respect to language and culture. As a result, are contemporary artists developing work locally or globally or is this even an issue? How do we use technology to strengthen our identity rather than weaken it? |

SESSION V | A Glimpse into Croatia's Performing Arts |
Delegates may choose between attending one of two sessions to gain a glimpse into Croatia's traditional singing and contemporary dance scenes. |
Option A | Croatian Traditional Singing: A variety of styles & genres |
This first part of the discussion will introduce traditional vocal styles and generes typical for Croatia. Field work video examples will introduce one of the most archaic, primitive and even ˝exotic˝ traditional vocal styles – the ojkanje. Ojkanje singing is the oldest known variant of archaic, traditional singing in the Croatian region. In the second part of the discussion, the singers from the ensemble Lado will demonstrate different singing techniques as well as a number of different vocal musical examples from various Croatian regions. |

Option B | Contemporary Dance Scene |
The contemporary dance scene in Croatia is one of the richest forms both in terms of the number of companies and artists but also with respect to its diversity. In this round table discussion we will hear from local choregraphers and the opportunities and challenges they face with regard to creative development, funding, finding an audience and touring. This highly interactive discussion will engage the delegates in their experiences with similar issues. |

SESSION VI | Cultural Europe and the World |
Europe embraces, not one but many cultures. Over the centuries local, regional and national traditions have developed through shared histories, conflicts, and philosophical and religious movements. Globalisation brings opportunities but also challenges to these traditions. With a particular emphasis on languages, we will explore how both local dialects and, indeed, entire languages are disappearing. As a Welsh proverb states 'People without language are people without heart'. |
