Meet ISPA's 2018 Middle East & North Africa Fellowship Program participant Reem Hg. Furjani!

Reem Hg. Furjani

Libya

Founder and Managing Director, Scene: Cultural Heritage

Reem holds a Master Honors degree in architecture from Cardiff University, and a Bachelor Honors degree in architecture from The University of Nottingham. Her theses discussed the immateriality of ‘being’, visual impairment, and perception in theatrical experiences.

Her current inter-disciplinary Ph.D. research crosses between critical heritage studies and performing arts. It explores performative negotiations of heritage value among contesting social groups in the multi-cultural heritage site of the Old City of Tripoli, Libya, by observing embodiments of meaning in the setting and from which she proposes the concept of ‘theaterification’.

Reem is Founder and Managing Director of Scene; a non-profit NGO based in Tripoli that seeks to preserve the cultural heritage of the Old City through mnemonic performances and site-specific theatre. She is also a playwright, experimental theatre director, and visual artist through which she illustrates identity works and cultural narratives of Tripoli, and her activities for heritage protection since 2011 have been recognized by various international organisations and media.
