2018 International Citation of Merit Recipient
David Staples has been a theatre consultant for over forty years advising arts groups, cities and governments on the creation of successful, innovative performing arts buildings. He has worked in 67 countries and contributed to many performing arts buildings ranging from national theatres, opera House and Internationally significant concert halls to many smaller scale educational and community projects. Working as part of the Theatre Projects team David has been involved in projects with over 86,000 seats.
David’s projects include The Oslo Opera House in Norway; The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay in Singapore; the Portland Center for Performing Arts in Oregon; The Dubai Opera; the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman and The Lowry in Salford, England.
David initially studied business administration before focussing on arts management where he was taught by the late Professor Anthony Field a former member of ISPA and previous recipient of the International Citation of Merit. He is a qualified management consultant in both the UK and USA and a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
David has contributed to the international theatre and arts management community for many years, chairing the Society of Theatre Consultants, acting as a board and committee member of ISPA and speaking regularly at international conferences on every continent except Antarctica. He chaired the editorial boards for the 2014 and 2018 International Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference. David was also a member of the Heathrow Airport Consultative Committee.
His contribution to arts management was recognised in 2007 when he was awarded The ISPA Patrick Hayes Award. He is currently advising the Shanghai City Government on architect selection for their major new opera house.
David has a small amphitheatre in the garden of his home in Slovenia.
