A native of Bogotá, Colombia, Álvaro Andrés Martínez Coronel holds a Master of Management in International Arts Management from SMU, HEC Montreal and SDA Bocconi. He is also a graduate of the Universidad de los Andes, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, minoring in Anthropology and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature with a minor in Classical Studies. Álvaro has held positions at the Ministry of Culture of Colombia. He oversaw the Colombia Creativa program, an alliance between the ministry and nine universities to provide higher education programs for artists without professional degrees.

He was also an advisor for the Direction of Arts at the Ministry, where he spearheaded programs related to public investment for the arts and collaborative projects in arts education and artistic development. Presently, Álvaro is the General Manager at Teatro Villa Mayor. It is the only public theater in Bogota’s south and a major cultural hub and meeting place for the community. Under his direction, the theater has created alliances with many different organizations to widen and diversify its programming, broadening its appeal to the community and increasing audience numbers. The theater is also becoming known as a space where local artists can develop and showcase new work. Álvaro volunteers for Bella Flor Foundation, where he has implemented and facilitated arts education and reading programs for children.

He is currently completing a Master in Analysis of Political, Economic and International Contemporary Problems from Universidad Externado de Colombia in alliance with San Carlos Diplomatic Academy.
