Sydney Festival

Lieven Bertels is the Sydney Festival director 2013-2015. Before moving to Australia, Lieven was artistic coordinator at the Holland Festival (Amsterdam). He read Musicology at the University of Leuven (Belgium) and received an MA in Composition at the University of Durham (UK). He briefly worked for BBC Scotland and Decca Records, returning to Belgium to become lecturer and later head of the Audio Dept. at the Brussels Film academy RITS, and to work as a radio producer at the Belgian national broadcaster VRT. From 2001 until 2004, he was artistic director of the new Concertgebouw in Bruges, an arts centre serving a broad mix of genres and forms. In addition to his work for the Holland Festival, Lieven Bertels was guest curator for the 2008 Gaida festival in Vilnius, Lithuania, which hosted the ISCM World Music Days that year. He joined the board of directors of the International Society for the Performing Arts in NY in 2010. In 2013, Lieven was made a Knight in the Belgian Order of the Crown. In December 2014, Lieven was appointed as the Artistic Director of Leeuwarden-Fryslân 2018 Cultural Capital of Europe.
