Ruth Mackenzie joined the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in January 2010, and curated the finale to the Cultural Olympiad, the London 2012 Festival with 200 commissions, over 25,000 artists achieving over 19 million attendances, 80% of them free. Before this, she was Expert Adviser on broadcasting and cultural policy for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. She was seconded to the Department by the Manchester International Festival where Alex Poots appointed her as General Director in 2006. Ruth was previously Artistic Director of Chichester Festival Theatre from 2002-06, General Director, Scottish Opera 1997-99 and Executive Director, Nottingham Playhouse 1990-97. She has also worked on a consultant for the Barbican Centre, Tate, BBC, London Symphony Orchestra and Young Vic and she was Head of Strategic Planning for the Southbank Centre 1986-90. She advised the Vienna Festival as a consultant dramaturg 2007-2010, when she was also Visiting Professor for Cultural Leadership at the City University.
