In Taiwan, Contemporary Dance Troupe Cloud Gate Brings in the Crowds

Saturday, August 3, 2019   (0 Comments)

Cloud Gate Dance Theater holds a special place in the country’s cultural life in Taiwan. Now its founder is passing the torch to a new generation. Cloud Gate, which will now be run by Cheng Tsung-lung, the director of the company’s junior troupe, has long been an established presence on the international dance scene.

The open-air show on July 27, 2019, was a final bow for Lin Hwai-min, the company’s founder, who was stepping down as the troupe’s artistic director after 46 years. Over 50,000 people gathered at the plaza between the National Theater and the National Concert Hall for the show. Like the company, he looms large in his country’s cultural life, as famous in Taiwan as any movie or pop star.

This New York Times feature looks forward to the life of Cloud Gate after its succession as it looks back on the history of the company and the achievements of the founder. Check out the full article on the New York Times website.
