Sornchai “Sonny” Chatwiriyachai is a Thai theatre practitioner, actor, and director whose work bridges performance and social change. After establishing himself as a respected stage actor, he shifted his focus toward using theatre to address social inequity. In 2013, he founded Malongdu Theatre in Bangkok, Thailand’s first Theatre of the Oppressed company, creating participatory performances that foster dialogue, healing, and collective action. His work has engaged diverse communities, including people with disabilities, migrants, elders, and youth.

Sonny is also Principal Investigator at Freaklab.org, exploring intersections of art, technology, and AI for social impact. A TEDx speaker, he has translated key works by Augusto Boal into Thai. He is a Senior Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in Southeast Asia (2021), ), and his recent work includes developing theatre-based interventions for people living with dementia and their caregivers.

He is currently working to establish one of the first Playback Theatre groups in Thailand.
