Maria Tri Sulistyani founded Papermoon Puppet Theatre that’s based in Yogyakarta-Indonesia in 2006 with no educational background of puppetry, makes puppetry becomes a never-ending experimental journey for her. In Papermoon, Ria becomes co-directors with her husband ( Iwan Effendi b.1979 – a visual artist).

Papermoon Puppet Theatre has been an experimenting kitchen of 6 members who came with different background for these past 18 years. The company has travelled to meet many people in different countries such as the USA, the Netherlands, Japan, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, UK, Germany, Canada, Myanmar, Pakistan, Taiwan, Philippines and Thailand.

As a mother of two, Ria succeed to bring Papermoon Puppet Theatre to worldwide audiences with their performances, visual arts projects, andworkshops with wide-range age of audiences. She also initiated and works as Artistic Director of PESTA BONEK, an independent international biennial puppet festival, since 2008.

On October 2021, together with Ayo Dongeng Indonesia- an Indonesian storyteller community, Papermoon Puppet Theatre initiated the first Festival of Theatre for Young Audience in Indonesia called GULALI FESTIVAL. In this festival, Ria had her role as the Artistic Director.

Being close to the audiences’ hearts is her reason to make her puppets alive.
