Rite of Spring is the second contemporary dance work by China’s iconic choreographer and dancer, Yang Liping. With a world-class creative team she will interpret the original Stravinsky musical narrative of ritual sacrifice from Chinese and Tibetan perspectives. It’s her belief the Rite of Spring is a work about the conflict of “nature” time versus “human” time; the inevitably of nature (Spring) against the human need for control (sacrifice). The Tibetan animal symbols of the Peacock (nature) and the Lion (human order) are inspiration for the movement language. The Peacock as the sacrificial victim will dutifully volunteer herself in the knowledge her death will result in reincarnation.
