National Day of Action in Australia: Art and Theatre Join Forces to Make Culture an Election Issue

June 17th, 2016 has been declared the National Arts Day of Action. Artists and arts organisations across Australia are mounting  protests and actions, online and offline, to galvanize renewed public support of the culture industries ahead of the Australian election.

Every theater companies in New South Wales, Australia, and many of the state’s major venues will campaign directly to audiences to get government funding cuts restored to the Australia Council.

Performers and venue staff will also distribute #IStandWithTheArts cards addressed to local member of parliaments for audiences to sign and address. These cards will be sent by the theatre companies to the relevant local member of parliaments.

Companies campaigning directly to audiences include Sydney Theatre Company, Hot House, Belvoir Theatre, Bell Shakespeare, Shopfront, Urban Theatre Projects and The Ensemble.
