"Treemonisha": from the Pitch to Full-scale Opera

Saturday, August 5, 2017   (0 Comments)

Today, we're highlighting Treemonisha by Toronto-based Volcano Theatre, presented to delegates at the New York Congress last January by Artistic Director, Ross Manson, and Librettist Leah-Simone Bowen. This genre-busting opera project Treemonisha is politically visionary and musically hybrid – drawing on both European classical and black folk traditions, and dealing with issues of education and democracy.

Since the congress, Librettist Leah-Simone Bowen has completed a residency in Stratford, Canada, where she worked on a 2nd draft libretto. Fast forward to January 2018, there will be a full-scale test of the new orchestration and libretto in Toronto! All of this has occurred with the support of a number of in-kind and co-commissioning partnerships developed since the pitch in New York, where the Southbank Centre (UK), Stanford Live, Washington Performing Arts, Canadian Opera Company, and the Banff Centre, joined the project!
