Shen Wei is a choreographer, dancer, painter and director internationally renowned for the breadth and scope of his original artistic vision. He has received the Nijinsky Emerging Choreographer, MacArthur “Genius” Award, the US Artists Fellow award, the Asian Cultural Council’s 2017 John D. Rockefeller 3rd Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the American Dance Festival. Born in China’s Hunan province, he trained in Chinese opera and Chinese ink painting, calligraphy, and Western visual art which propelled an interest in modern dance. In 1991 he became a founding member of Guangdong Modern Dance Company, the first modern dance company in China. He founded Shen Wei Dance Arts in New York City in 2000 and toured in over 30 countries in 140 cities. He received major commissions from Lincoln Center Festival, the Kennedy Center, American Dance Festival, BAM, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Park Avenue Armory, Edinburgh International Festival, Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Hong Kong New Vision Arts Festival, Dutch National Ballet, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and the Opening Ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the lead choreographer. His own technique “Natural Body Development” taught in many universities and dance centres. His major painting solo exhibition held at MDC Museum of Art + Design Miami, Asia Society Hong Kong Center, Shanghai Power Station of Art, and Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
