Jurriaan Cooiman (b. 1966, Netherlands) studied Dance Pedagogy in Den Haag and then Cultural Management at the University of Basel. Since 1995, he's been organizing festivals celebrating contemporary composers like Sofia Gubaidulina, György Kurtág Toshio Hosokawa. Since 2003, he's been the founder and artistic director of CULTURESCAPES, a multidisciplinary biennial festival in Basel and other parts of Switzerland.

The focus was on Georgia in 2003; Ukraine in 2004; Armenia in 2005; Estonia in 2006; Romania in 2007; Turkey in 2008; Azerbaijan in 2009; China in 2010; Israel in 2011; Moscow in 2012; the Balkans in 2013; Tokyo in 2014; Iceland in 2015; Greece in 2017; Poland in 2019; the Amazonas in 2021; the Sahara in 2023 and 2025. The topic for 2027 is Arctic/indigenous North.

Cooiman is on the board of the European Festivals Association (EFA) and is in the programme committee of the ISPA. He's also taught cultural management and international relations at the University of Hamburg, Basel, Winterthur and St. Gallen. He was on the jury in Krakow and Toruń in Poland, and at Africa Simply the Best in Bobo Dioulasso in Burkina Faso.
