Samar Haddad King, Artistic/Founding Director of Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre (YSDT), graduated from the Ailey/Fordham BFA program in New York City under the tutelage of Kazuko Hirabayashi. Her work has been commissioned throughout the US and Arab World by Hubbard Street 2 (Chicago); Palest’In and Out Festival (Paris); Ramallah Contemporary Dance Festival (Ramallah) and others, and has been performed in 14 countries on 4 continents since 2005. She was the 2015 recipient of the Prix des Jeunes Créateurs Palestiniens pour la Diversité des Expressions Artistiques at the Palest’In & Out Festival in Paris, a 2018 resident artist at Chaillot - théâtre national de la Danse (Paris), a 2019/20 Resident Fellow at The Center for Ballet and the Arts (CBA) at NYU and is a 2021 Toulmin Creator (CBA/National Sawdust). Samar frequently collaborates on theater and musical theater productions, including Dead Are My People (2018, Noor Theatre, NYC), and We Live in Cairo (2019, American Repertory Theater, Boston). In 2021, Samar choreographed a site-specific work for The Walk (with little Amal), an international festival in support of refugees in Marseille, France (Good Chance Theatre) and in NYC (St. Ann’s Warehouse and The Walk Productions). She co-authored a chapter on dance with Sandra Noeth in the Arab World for the 2nd edition of Contemporary Choreography (Routledge, January 2018) and lectures on her transnational, cross-disciplinary work.
