![]() James BoydChurchill Fellow James recently completed a Churchill Fellowship on how to manage the ethical dilemmas that can arise when arts and cultural organisations engage with the private sector. His report, PURE MONEY? Global Responses Offering Arts Organisations Per spectives and Actions to Help Navigate Private Sector Funding Dilemmas was published in September 2023. This research follows over 30 years of experience working in the arts in the UK and Australia. As Director, Development of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, he pioneered US style arts fundraising practices in Australia. Since 2008 he has worked for the commonwealth government across the arts and cultural sector, philanthropy and business to build greater arts industry sustainability through innovative cross-sector engagement, strategic partnerships, sponsorship and philanthropy. He was West Australia’s representative of Artsupport Australia, an office of the Australia Council that brokered over $80million of philanthropic support to the arts between 2001 and 2011. Since then, he has mentored and coached over three hundred arts companies on strategic sustainability and fundraising. In July 2023, he was appointed State Manager, Development & Partnerships(WA), Creative Australia. James is also a national leader of collaborative philanthropy. He introduced Impact100 to Australia from the US, co-founding Impact100 WA and helping similar groups form across Australia. In 2021, in response to the challenging impacts of COVID-19 on the arts industry, he co-founded Arts Impact WA, Australian’s first large collective giving initiative supporting the arts, combining the resources of private donors and seventeen private foundations.
