Mother Sugar is the stage name of singer-songwriter, Rehana Jomeen. Her sound is a fusion of jazz and neo-soul. Poet and lyricist Rehana addresses social struggles, systemic racism and sexism, the police state and other subjects centred around oppression. Her band consists of Leeds Conservatoire graduates, Sam Brown on violin, Caroline Webb on flute, as well as Leeds Conservatoire students Tariq Megrisi on drums and Pedraum Agahi on guitar. She sometimes performs as a two-piece with Pedraum on guitar. Rehana’s vocal influences include Lianne La Havas, Astrud Gilberto and Judith Hill. Rehana recently took part in a week-long music residency led by critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer Nubya Garcia as part of the Brighter Sound All Things Equal initiative. She supported Heritage at the Golden Lion in Todmorden at the End of March 2023 and Tiger Edison in Leeds in April 2023. She will perform at Manchester International Festival on the 2nd July 2023.
